Circulation
Move substances around the body. Diffusion;Move molecules from high to low concentration by random movement
1 of 7
Open Circulatory System
Insects; heart pumps blood into cavities surrounding organs. Heart relaxes> blood drawn back from cavity into heart through valve opening
2 of 7
Closed Circulatory System
Vertebrates; blood enclosed in tubes. Creates high blood pressure, blood forced through channels. Travels faster so more efficient. Animals large in size, more active.
3 of 7
Blood Travel
Leaves heart under pressure> along arteries> capillaries. Large number of capillaries> close contact with cells> substances exchanged. Blood returns to heart by veins. Valves ensure blood flows in one direction.
4 of 7
Single Circulation; fish
Heart pumps deoxygenated blood to gils. Gaseous exchange occurs. CO2 from blood> water. O2 from water> blood. Blood leaving flows to rest of body, then returns to the heart.
5 of 7
Double Circulation; Birds and mammals
Right Ventricle of heart pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs> receives oxygen. Oxygenated blood returns to heart, pumped for 2nd time by the L ventricle to rest of body.
6 of 7
Double Circulation
Heart gives blood returning boost> reduces time for circulation> higher metabolic rate as food and oxygen is delivered more rapidly to cells.
