What are Carbohydrates for?
For release of energy
1 of 20
What are Fats for?
To keep warm and releasing energy
2 of 20
What are Proteins for?
To build and repair cells
3 of 20
What are Vitamins and Minerals ions for?
To keep skin, bones, blood and everything healthy (healthy bodily functions)
4 of 20
What is Metabolism?
The chemical reactions that happen within your body
5 of 20
How does your metabolic rate vary?
How much MUSCLE you have, how ACTIVE you are and INHERITED FACTORS.
6 of 20
What is the term for when people's diets are badly out of balence?
Malnourished
7 of 20
What are health risks of eating too much?
Obesity, Type 2 diabetes and hearts disease
8 of 20
What are the health risks of eating too little?
Not eating enough vitamins and minerals can cause deficiency disease. Vitamin C-SCURVY and Vitamin D-RICKETS
9 of 20
What are the main inherited factors?
Being born with a low metabolic rate and cholesterol levels
10 of 20
What are pathogens?
These are microbes that can cause infectious diseases like ATHLETE'S FOOT
11 of 20
How do Bacteria and Viruses make you feel ill.
Bacteria damages your cells and produce toxins and Viruses replicate by invading our cells. The cell then bursts and releases all the new viruses. They can mutate and often have different antigens so the vaccine won't work.
12 of 20
How do White Blood Cells protect your body from diseases?
White blood cells consume the pathogens and digest them. They produce antibodies when they find a foreign antigen. They then produce Antitoxins to kill off the toxins produced by the bacteria
13 of 20
What does the MMR vaccine protect you from?
Measles, Mumps and Rubella
14 of 20
How does a vaccination prevent diseases?
You are injected with small amounts of inactive pathogens and because they have antigens on the surface your white blood cells produce antibodies against them. So, iinfected with same one later, the antibodies produced kill the pathogen, no illness.
15 of 20
What are antibiotics used for?
Killing bacteria (penicillen). They do NOT kill viruses (flu)
16 of 20
What are painkillers used for?
Reducing pain, symptoms of a disease but does NOT cure it
17 of 20
What happens when bacteria becomes resistant to antibiotics?
Bacteria can mutate and some of these mutations can cause the bacteria to become resistant to the antibiotic. Resistant strains (types) of bacteria e.g MRSA have increased as a result of natural selection.
18 of 20
What did Semmelweis do?
He cut down deaths by using antiseptics. Lots of women were dying from disease after giving birth. Using basic hygiene by doctors cut down the death rate and this controlled the spread of disease.
19 of 20
What is the term for a big outbreak of disease and spreading a disease all around the world?
Big outbreak of disease-EPIDEMIC Spreading all around the world-PANDEMIC
