Biology 2 Quiz no.7

?
Which four diseases can be caused by smoking?
Heart disease, lung cancer, bronchitis and emphysema.
1 of 24
What is emphysema?
Chemicals in tobacco smoke weaken walls of alveoli, and coughing can burst them damaging the lung tissue. The lungs can't take in enough oxygen so the person gets breathless.
2 of 24
What is lung cancer?
Tar is though to be main cause. Tumours form in the lung and if not discovered quickly they can spread aroud the body. Cancers can also originate in the mouth, throat and oesophagus.
3 of 24
What is passive smoking?
People that are affected by people smoking around them.
4 of 24
What two things affect passive smokers?
The smokers exhaled smoke and the smoke from the cigarette.
5 of 24
What are the effects of passive smokign on a person's health?
The same as the effects on an active smoker.
6 of 24
How has the government reacted to smoking? (5)
Banned smoking in public places, health warning on packs, moving cigarettes form obvious places in shops, increased prices and warning adverts.
7 of 24
What is biodiversity?
The variety or organisms in an area.
8 of 24
Why is biodiversity important? (Biological)
Food chains and habitats.
9 of 24
Why is biodiversity important? (Non-biological)
Industrial material, medicine and relaxation/enjoyment.
10 of 24
What is happening to biodiversity? (3)
It's decreasing, there is a higher rate of extinction, evolution is not a fast enough process to replace the lsot species.
11 of 24
How do we know what lives where? (2)
Observation + sampling.
12 of 24
How do tree beating work?
Used for counting small invertebrates, remove aniamls from environment. It is important to release animals back into the environment.
13 of 24
What can recapture prove?
Proves repeatability and finds out if the environment is stable.
14 of 24
What is an endangered species?
At risk of extinction and low in numbers.
15 of 24
How do we know a species is endangered?
Monitoring numbers.
16 of 24
How can we conserve species? (5)
Zoos (breeding in captivity to maintain numbers), Wildlife sanctuaries (protect the environment, encourage wildlife), Organisations (e.g. CITES, SSSI), seed banks and breeding programs.
17 of 24
What is biological control?
Using a natural predator to control a pest.
18 of 24
What are the three advantages of biological control?
No chemicals, Lower impact to environment, Specific to pest.
19 of 24
What is an alien species?
A species that is introduced form a foreign country.
20 of 24
Why do alein species need to be controlled?
It has lost it's natural enemy, which needs to be introduced. It could cause plants in it's new enviornment to struggle.
21 of 24
What advice would you give to the government before introducing the natural predator?
Find out about it's diet, if it carries diseases and it's natural predator.
22 of 24
What is the disadvantage of biological control?
Using biological control emans there will always be a small amount of pest.
23 of 24
What is net movement? (Osmosis).
More water moves from the beaker into the visking tubing than out. If concentrations are equal, there is no net movement.
