Biology 2 Quiz

?
What are the two mai types of cells?
Animal and plant cells
1 of 21
What is the job of the nucleus?
To control what the cell does. It also contains instructions to make new cells.
2 of 21
What is a vacuole?
A large, permanent vacuole filled with a liquid called cell sap.
3 of 21
What do light microscopes do?
They have two lenses, the objective lens and the eye piece lens. They can magnify up to 1000 times and use light.
4 of 21
What do electron microscopes do?
Use a beam of electrons, and can magnify up to 500,000 times. Help see the structure inside cells in detail.
5 of 21
What are the adaptations of a red blood cell?
They have no nucleus to make more space for oxygen, and their shape gives them an increased surface area to absorb more oxygen.
6 of 21
What are the adaptations of a sperm cell?
They have a tail to swim and are haploid.
7 of 21
What are the adaptations of a nerve cell?
They have an extension and insulation.
8 of 21
What are the adaptations of a root hair cell?
They have an extension to increase surface area to absorb more nutrients and water.
9 of 21
What is the other specialised plant cell?
Palisade cells.
10 of 21
What are stem cells?
Cells that have not differentiated yet. They can grow ito any type of tissue.
11 of 21
What is tissue?
An accumulation of cells all doing the same function.
12 of 21
Where can stem cells come from?
Embryos and bone marrow.
13 of 21
What can they help cure?
Parkinson's disease and diabetes.
14 of 21
Why use adult stem cells over embryonic stem cells?
There are less stages in production, it is more ethical (not creating a life to kill it), and there is no need for a donor.
15 of 21
Where are stem cells in plants?
Growing points called meristem.
16 of 21
Where can mristem be found?
The tips of shoots and in the roots.
17 of 21
What are the differences between a bacteria cell and an plant/animal cell?
Bacterium don't have a nucleus, they don't have mitochondria for respiration and the cell wall of a bacterium is not made of cellulose.
18 of 21
How do fungi, e.g. yeast, reproduce?
Via budding.
19 of 21
What are virusues?
Smaller than bacteria, all parasitic, made of a protein coat and genetic material.
20 of 21
Why are viruses not considered to be 'proper ' cells?
Many components are missing, a virus on it's own is not considered alive.
