Deoxyribonucleic acid, the chemical that makes up chromosomes
1 of 18
Chromosomes
Found in pairs(one from your mother and one from your father), chromosomes are in the nucleus of the cell and are made up of different genes.
2 of 18
Base
Bases are proteins made up of amino acids. DNA molecules are made up of bases set up in a specific code which make up the characteristics of a gene. There are 4 different bases (A, T, C. G) that make up thousands of different combinations.
3 of 18
Double helix
The structure a DNA molecule i found as - two strands, twisted together
4 of 18
Mitosis
A type of cell division that leads to the growth and replacement of cells
5 of 18
Meiosis
A type of cell division that halves the number of chromosomes in the resulting daughter cells, this produces sex cells
6 of 18
Allele
An alternative version of the same gene
7 of 18
Genotype
The combination of a pair of alleles for a specific gene
8 of 18
Phenotype
The characteristic that can be seen
9 of 18
Homozygous
A gene with the same allele in its pair
10 of 18
Heterozygous
A gene with different alleles in its pair
11 of 18
Cystic Fibrosis
A serious defect of the pancreas. It is caused by the recessive gene and therefore the gene needs to be homozygous
12 of 18
Sickle cell
Causes the person with the disease to produce an abnormal kind of haemoglobin in his or her
13 of 18
Dominant allele
The allele that always shows even if the individualonly has one copy of the allele
14 of 18
Recessive allele
This allele only shows if the individual has two copies of the recessive alleles
15 of 18
Polydactyly
A disorder where you end up with extra digits
16 of 18
Cell
The basic building blocks of a living organism
17 of 18
Nucleus
The part of a cell that contains genetic information
