Biology 1A - Human Biology: Hormones in Plants

?
What is Auxin?
A plant hormone that controls growth.
1 of 10
What does Auxin do?
It controls the growth of a plant in response to LIGHT (Phototropism) and GRAVITY (Gravitropism) and MOISTURE.
2 of 10
Where is Auxin made?
In the tips of shoots and roots.
3 of 10
Why does Auxin move backwards?
To make the cells just behind the tips grow longer.
4 of 10
What happens if the tip of a shoot is removed?
No auxin is made and the shoot may stop growing.
5 of 10
Auxin increases growth in the shoot, but slows growth in what?
The root.
6 of 10
Which way will a shoot grow when exposed to light, towards or away?
Towards the light. This is because more auxin builds up in the shaded side, causing it to grow quicker than the exposed side.
7 of 10
Which way will a shoot grow when exposed to gravity?
Away from gravity. Gravity will cause the auxin to build up on the lower side of the tip, meaning the lower side grows faster.
8 of 10
Which way will a root grow when exposed to gravity?
Towards gravity. Gravity will cause a build up of auxin on the lower side, which grows slower due to Auxin's effect on the root.
9 of 10
Which way will a root grow when exposed to moisture?
Towards moisture. More auxin builds up on the side of a root that has more moisture. Auxin in the root slows growth, causing the root to bend toward the moisture.
