Describe the components of a balanced diet and say why each is needed
Carbohydrates-Energy, Protein-Growth/cell repair, Fats- To store energy and keep warm, Fibre- Keep the difestive system working, Vitamins+ Mineral- Keeps blood and skin healthy
1 of 18
Describes the effects of an unbalanced diet
Eating too much can lead to obesity, type two diabetes, high blood presure and cholestral. Too little can cause deficiency diseases, scurvy or malnutrition
2 of 18
Decribe how excercise affects health
No excercise can cause obesity, people who excercise regulary are using the energy they have taken in
3 of 18
Explain metabolic rate and the affect of excercise on the metabolic rate
The speed in which the body uses up energy.Excercise and inherited factors can affect the speed
4 of 18
State how inherited factors may affect the metabolic rate and cholesteral
They can affect metabolic rate by causing underactive thyroid gland which lowers the metabolic rate and causes obesity. High cholestrerol causes risk of heart disease
5 of 18
Describe a pathogen
A disease causin micro-organisms, there are two types, bacteria and viruses
6 of 18
Describe how viruses and bacteria make us ill
Bacteria rapidly reproduce, they damage cells and produce toxins. Viruses replicate themselves by invading your cells and produce many copies of themselves the cell will burst and release a virus
7 of 18
State some ways the body protects us against pathogens
Skin, hairs and mucus in the respiratory tract. Platelets help blood clot quickly to seal wounds
8 of 18
Describe 3 ways white blood cells work
1. Engulf and digest the foreign atigen 2.Produce proteins called antibodies, locking onto them and killing them. They are reproduced rapidly and carried around the body to kill smilar bacteria/virus.If happens again the WBC will quickly reproduce
9 of 18
Describe how an individual may become immune to a pathogen
Weak immune system
10 of 18
Describe how vaccinations can protect individuals and populations
Individuals- treating measels, rubella, mumps etc. Population- treat epidermics
11 of 18
Decribe Semmelwiess theory and explain the importance
The bacteria from the doctors who had just treated dead people transferred into the mothers during child brith as they didnt wash their hands causing the mothers to dies after childbirth. Semmelweiss suggested that the doctors washed their hands befo
12 of 18
State how some different medicines work
Painkillers- relieve the pain (DONT tackle the disease). Antibiotics- kill the bacteria without killing your body cells (its important to be treated with the right one)
13 of 18
Explain why antibiotics dont work on viral infections, and why treatment is difficult
.
14 of 18
Explain antibiotic resistance
.
15 of 18
Give some problems with resistance strains of bacteria or viruses
.
16 of 18
Write a method for culturing microorganisms in sterile conditions
.
17 of 18
Explain differences in school and industrial conditions for growing microbes
.
