What is your metabolism and metabolic rate?
You need energy to fuel the chemical reactions in your body to keep you alive. These reactions are called you metabolism. The speed at which these go at is called you metabolic rate.

Microorganism which enter your body and make you feel ill are called pathogens, what are the 2 types called and how do they make you feel ill?
Bacteria - Small living cells, make you feel ill by damaging your cells and producing toxins. Viruses - even smaller, copy themselves using body cells, eventually cells burst causing you to feel ill.
2 of 24
Your body has a good defence system includong your skin, hair & mucus. one of the most important one are your white cells. How do they kill pathogens?
They consume them, Produce antibodies which lock onto the pathogens-they're made for a specific pathgoen and won't work on others, Produce antitioxins, these stop toxins being produced.
3 of 24
Name a few pro's and con's of vaccination
Vaccines helped contorl lots of infectious diseases that used to be commmon in the UK. However, they don't always work.
4 of 24
What do Antibiotics do and name a disease have become resistant to them.
Antibiotics kill bacteria but not pathogens and viruses. This is because it's difficult for drugs to kill the viruses without damaging the body cells. A few diseases have become resistant to drugs including MRSA.
5 of 24
Difference between sense organs and receptors?
IE: The eye is a sense organ, it conatins light receptors!
6 of 24
What is the central nervous system (CNS)?
CNS is where all the info from the sense organs is sent, and where the responses are coordinated. It's made up of the brain and spinal cord. The INSTRUCTIONS are sent from the CNS to the effectors.
7 of 24
What is SRSRMER?
Stimulus, Receptor, Sensory neurone, Relay neurone, Motor neurone, Effector, Response.
8 of 24
What is a synapse?
Synapses connect neurones. The connection between 2 neurones is called a synapse.
9 of 24
What are reflexes?
Reflexes are automatic responsesto certain stimuli - they just happen. They're much more faster than normal responses because you don't have to think and they help you from getting injured.
10 of 24
What is meant by the term hormones?
Hormones are chemical messengers which travel through your blood to activate target cells.
11 of 24
What are the differences between a nerve and a hormone?
Nerves are mcuh more fatser and act for a short time on a very precise area. Whereas, Hormones are much more slower which act for a long time in a more general way.

What is FSH, Oestrogen & LH?
FSH - produced by pituitary gland, causes an egg to mature & makes ovaries produce Oestragen. Oestragen - Inhibits FSH. LH - Causes the release of an egg from the ovaries.
13 of 24
What is the contraceptive pill and the injection?
The pill is a pill which allows no eggs to mature. This conatins oestragen meaning no FSH is produced. The injection conatins FSH so that women have more of a chance of getting pregnant.
14 of 24
What is IVF?
IVF stands for in vitro fertilisation. This is where eggs are collected from the woman's ovaries and fertilised in a lab using the man's sperm. Once the embryos are small tiny balls they're inserted into the woman's womb.
15 of 24
Name a few pro's and con's of the contraceptive pill, the injection and IVF?
Pill very effective & can reduce the risk of getting cancer. However, can have side effects and doesn't protect from STD. The injection helps alot, but doesn't always work. IVF can give an infertile couple a baby but can have strong side effects.
16 of 24
What is an Auxin?
Auxin is a plant hormonetht controls growth.
17 of 24
What is a homeostasis?
Allt eh functions of your body which try to maintain a constant internal environment.
18 of 24
There are 4 types of homeostasis; ions, water, temp & blood sugar (BS). ions are taken into the body as food and are lost through sweat and urine. how are water and temp?
Water; taken into the body as food and drink, lost through sweat, breath & urine. Temp; enzymes work best around 37 degress so your body temp is around this much.
19 of 24
How does blood sugar work (BS)?
BS; eating foods with carbohydrates puts sugar into the blood by guts. Sugar is removed by cells from the blood, where the sugar is used as energy. The blod sugar is kept at a steady level so that the cells get a constant supply of energy?
20 of 24
Drugs can change your body chemistry, but how?
The chemical changes caused by a drugcan make people become addicted. If the drug isn't taken, an addict can suffer withdrawal symptoms which aren't always pleasant. Some are given by doctors as prescriptions.
21 of 24
There are peformance enhancing drugs, but what are they and what are they used for?
Some athletes take these drugs to make them better at sports. But these drugs can have negative health effects such as high blood pressure.
22 of 24
Give few comments for and against peformance enhancing drugs?
Against; "It's unfair if peole gain and advantage by taking drugs". For; " Drug-free sports aren't really fair anyway because they all have different coaches" or "Athletes have the rights to make their own decisions".
23 of 24
What is thalidomide?
It is a drug which was developed as a sleeping pill, it found that it helped cure morning sickness for pregnant women. However, the drug caused negative effects on the unborn baby.
