What are the two main types of pathogen?
Bacteria and viruses
1 of 9
What is bacteria?
Bacteria are very small living cells (1/100th) the size of your body cell, which can rapidly reproduce inside your body.
2 of 9
How does bacteria make you feel ill?
1. They damage your cells. 2. They produce toxins(poisons).
3 of 9
What are viruses?
They are not cells and they are much smaller than a bacterium (1/100th of a bacterium).
4 of 9
How do viruses make you feel ill?
1. They replicate themselves by invading your cells and using the cells machinery to produce copies of themselves. 2. The cell will eventually then burst, releasing all the new viruses. 3. This cell damage is what makes you ill.
5 of 9
How does your body prevent microorganisms getting into your body by cuts?
Platelets (small fragments of cells) help clot quickly to seal wounds.
6 of 9
What happens if the blood has a low number of platelets?
It will clot more slowly.
7 of 9
When white blood cells come across an invading microbe what are their 3 lines of attack?
1.Consume them. 2.Produce antibodies-Every invading cell has unique molecules(antigens)on its surface. When white bood cells come across a foreign antigen, they produce proteins(antibodies)to lock on to and kill invading cell. 3.Produce antitoxins.
8 of 9
What happens in a vaccination?
Injected with smal amounts of dead/inactive microorganisms. Carry antigens, which cause your body to produce antibodies to attack them. e.g. MMR vaccine-weakened versions of virus that cause measles, mumps and rubella(German measles)all in one vaccine.
