Biology Unit 6 - TB

?
What is the bacteria?
Mycobacterium Tuberculosis
1 of 8
How does infection occur?
When tiny droplets containing the bacteria are inhaled into the lungs (person coughs/sneezes)
2 of 8
How does the bacteria survive?
Is taken up by phagocytes and survives & replicates inside these
3 of 8
Why don't most people develop TB straight away?
Their immune system seals off the infected phagocytes in structures in the lungs called tubercles
4 of 8
Reactivation more likely in what people?
People with weakened immune systems - e.g, with AIDS
5 of 8
What does the dormant bacteria do?
Becomes reactivated and overcomes the immune system - causing TB
6 of 8
Initial symptoms?
Coughing, general weakness, fever etc
7 of 8
