Biology Unit 5 - Sampling

?
2 types of sampling
Random or non random
1 of 15
Why should you normally use random?
To avoid bias
2 of 15
Why may it sometimes be necessary to do non-random?
1) Habitats where theres a lot of variety in abiotic factors &/ distribution of species in the habitat 2) You want to make sure all the different areas/species are sampled
3 of 15
Type of non-random?
Systematic sampling
4 of 15
How to carry out sampling?
1) Choose area 2) Count no. of indivuiausl of each species 3) Repeat 4) Use results to estimate total no. of individuals/total no. of different species
5 of 15
Where do you take samples in a systematic sample?
Fixed intervals
6 of 15
What can frame quadrats be used to investigate?
Immobile populations
7 of 15
3 types of sampling techniques that could be used to investigate plant populations?
1) Frame quadrats 2) Point quadrats 3) Transects
8 of 15
How to measure rainfall
Rain gauge - rain falls into cylinder and then can measure volume
9 of 15
How to measure humidity
The amount of water vapour in the air - hygrometer
10 of 15
How to measure oxygen availability
Oxygen sensor - o2 dissolved in aquatic habitats
11 of 15
How to measure solar input
Light sensor
12 of 15
What are edaphic factors?
Soil conditions
13 of 15
How to measure edaphic factors? (2)
1) pH (indicator liquid/electronic pH monitor) 2) Moisture content (before & after - dried out in oven)
14 of 15
How to measure topography (2)
1) Relief - GPS 2) Slope angle - clinometer
