Biology Unit 3.1 - Gaseous Exchange in the Lungs

?
Describe the features for optinum gas exchange.
Large surface area. Thin for short diffusin pathway. A good blood supply for steep concretration gradient. Moist. Well ventilated for steep conc. gradient.
1 of 10
Describe the job of the breathing system.
To move air in and out of the lungs.
2 of 10
Describe the lungs when we inhale air.
As the volume of chest increases, the pressure of the chest is lowered. Atmospheric pressure forces air into the lungs, and they expand unitl pressure is equal (diaphram contracts, which descreases pressure, increasing surface area).
3 of 10
Describe air when we exhale.
As the volume of the chest descreases, the pressure increases. Air is forced out of the lungs until the air pressure is equal, inside and out the lungs (diaphram relaxes, which increases pressure, and decreases surface area).
4 of 10
Describe gas exchange in the alveoli of the lungs.
Gas exchange occurs in the alveoli of the lungs. Oxygen passes into the lungs by diffusion. At the same time, CO2 paases from the blood, into the alveoli to be breathed out.
5 of 10
What part of the blood; transports most CO2; transports most O2?
1)- Plasma. 2)- Red blood cells.
6 of 10
Why do people have promblem breathing?
Asmtha, paralysis, damaged aveoli, and small surface area.
7 of 10
Describe negative pressure systems (iron lungs).
Patients lie in a metal cylinder, with a tight seal, with the patients head in a tight seal. Air is pumped out chamber, which lowerrs pressure (vacuum). So chest wall of patient moves up (+pressure in chest, so air drawn into chest).
8 of 10
Describe negative pressure systems (iron lungs) pt.2.
The vacuum is automatically switched off, and air moves into the chamber, + pressure. The ribs move down, - volume, and + pressure inside thorax, which forces air out of the lungs.
9 of 10
Describe positive pressure pressure systems (ventilator).
force measured air into the lungs. Once the lungs have been inflated, the air pressure stops. The lungs then deplate as ribs move down again, forcing air back out again.
