What is Diffusion? (2 marks)
Diffusion is the gradual movement of particles from a highly concentrated place to a less concentrated place.
1 of 14
Where does diffusion happen? Why? (2 marks)
Diffusion happens in both solutions and gases.
2 of 14
What happens as the concentration gradient increases? (1 mark)
The bigger the concentration gradient (the difference in concentration) the faster the diffusion rate.
3 of 14
What happens during higher temperatures? (2 marks)
During higher temperatures the diffusion rate increases as the particles gain more energy and therefore move around a lot faster.
4 of 14
What do the Cell Membranes do? (1 mark)
Cell Membranes hold the cell together however let substances in and out.
5 of 14
Only what substances can move in and out of cells through the process of diffusion (3 marks)
Only small, dissolved molecules can move in and out of cells through the process of diffusion.
6 of 14
What 2 examples are there of small molecules that can diffuse in and out of a cell? And what are their functions (4 marks)
Oxygen molecules which are needed for respiration, Water, Glucose and Amino Acids
7 of 14
Big Molecules can't fit through, give 2 examples? (2 marks)
Big Molecules such as Starch and Proteins can't fit through.
8 of 14
What 3 factors affects the rate of diffusion? (3 marks)
Surface area, Concentration gradient, Distance for diffusion, Temperature.
9 of 14
What is Osmosis? (3 marks)
Osmosis is the movement of water particles across a partially-permeable membrane from a reign of higher water concentration to a region of of lower water concentration.
10 of 14
What is a Partially Permeable membrane? (1 mark)
A Partially Permeable membrane is a membrane with very small holes in it.
11 of 14
What happens due to there being more water molecules on one side of the membrane than the other? (3 marks)
Because there are more water molecules on one side of the membrane than there is on the other, there is a steady net flow of water into the region with the fewer water molecules.
12 of 14
What happens due to the steady net flow? (3 marks)
Regarding the steady net flow, the stronger solution gets more dilute as the water tries to even up the concentration either side of the membrane.
13 of 14
What is the equation used for calculating the percentage change. (2 marks)
Percentage change = Final value - Initial value / Initial value x 100
