What is the role of xylem?
Transports water from roots to leaves. Moves in one direction.
1 of 6
What is the structure of xylem?
Thick cell walls, extra layers of lignin. Long thin tubes, with hollow lumen. Xylem is made of dead cells. Lignin makes it very strong.
2 of 6
What is the role of phloem?
Transports sugars/glucose from leaves to other plants of the plant. Moves up and down plant
3 of 6
What is the structure of phloem?
Long and thin. Alive cells. Have tiny sieve plates to create control. Grouped around the xylem. Permeable cell walls.
4 of 6
What is transpiration?
How water moves from the roots to the leaves. Doesn't use energy
5 of 6
How does transpiration work?
Water evaporates and diffuses out the leaf. More water is drawn out the xylem cells inside the leaf to replace whats lost. As xylem cells make a continuous tube from the leaf, down the stem to the roots, producing a flow of water.
