RESPIRATION SYMBOL EQUATION
6O2 + C6H12O6 = 6H2O + CO2
1 of 16
RESPIRATION WORD EQUATION
Oxygen + Glucose = Water + Carbon Dioxide + ATP
2 of 16
Where does repression happen?
In the mitochondria. It is the release of energy from our food.
3 of 16
COMBUSTION
Fuel + Oxygen = Carbon Dioxide + Water
4 of 16
Anaerobic Respiration
Glucose = Lactic Acid + ATP
5 of 16
Aerobic Respiration
Glucose + Oxygen = Carbon Dioxide + Water + ATP
6 of 16
Where does anaerobic respiration happen?
Happens in cytoplasm, and is controlled by enzymes.
7 of 16
Glucose and Oxygen are the raw materials for respiration
They are transported from the gut and lungs by the Circulatory System.
8 of 16
Toxic products are taken by the circulatory system to be excreted.
ATP is also taken through the circulatory system.
9 of 16
Why's Respiration important?
Provides energy for life processes (growth, sensitivity, nutrition, movement, excretion, reproduction)
10 of 16
For example: muscle contraction, Nerve impulse transmission.
ATP is the release of energy in cells.
11 of 16
ATP is broken down into ADP and AMP.
These groups can be transferred to other molecules and make them more reactive, e.g. chemical changes in liver.
12 of 16
cAMP (Cyclic AMP)
Hormones trigger cAMP to activate it. Activates enzymes within cell to cause changes in body.
13 of 16
Intense exercise increases the demand for oxygen by retiring muscle cells.
if demand for oxygen exceeds rate of oxygen being supplied, anaerobic kicks in.
14 of 16
VENTILATION & CIRCULATORY RATE increase to meet demand for oxygen.
Concentration of CO2 increases and builds up in muscles.
15 of 16
Muscles will generate heat, and an increased pH
increased acidity and temperature encourages oxyhemoglobin to release oxygen (allows further aerobic respiration)
