What is a drug?
A substance that alters the body's chemistry.

What is a medicinal drug?
A drug that is medically useful, like antibiotics. Most need prescriptions.

What is a recreational drug?
A drug that is used for fun these can be both legal and illegal.

What is a performance enhancing drug?
A drug that can improve a person's performance in sport.

What are statins?
They are prescribed drugs used to lower the risk of heart and circulatory disease.

Why is cannabis taken both legally and illegally?
They are used illegally for fun and prescribed legally to reduce pain.

What are the 3 main stages in drug testing?
1.) Drugs are tested on human cells and tissues in a lab 2.) Then the drug is tested on live animals 3.) It is then tested on human volunteers in a clinical trial.

Describe the problems with the testing of Thalidomide.
It was intended as a sleeping pill, but was later found as an effective treatment for morning sickness. It was tested on animals that weren't pregnant and was tested as a sleeping pill instead. Therefore the effects were not recorded accurately.

What is thalidomide used for now?
Leprosy and some cancers.

What two categories are illegal drugs classified in?
Hard and soft.

What is a hard drug and an example?
These are usually thought of as being more addictive and dangerous. E.g. heroin

What is a soft drug and an example?
There are thought of as less addictive and dangerous. E.g. cannabis

Why do people use dangerous drugs?
Enjoyment, relaxation and stress relief.

What type of drug is alcohol?
A depressant.

Is alcohol and smoking legal or illegal?
Illegal.

What are the effects of alcohol consumption?
The nervous system and slows down responses. Excessive drinking can cause liver disease and brain damage.

What are the effects of smoking?
Causes disease of the heart, blood vessels and lungs. Tobacco smoke causes cancer.
