What 4 things does an animal cell have which a plant cell does not?
Nucleus, Cytoplasm, Cell membrane and Mitochondria.
1 of 27
What 3 extra things does a plant cell contain which an animal cell does not?
Rigid Cell Wall, Large Vacuole and Chloroplasts.
2 of 27
What is the role of the nucleus?
The nucleus contains DNA/chromosomes that controls whar the cell does.
3 of 27
What is the role of the cytoplasm?
Cytoplasm is a gel-like substance where most of the cell's chemical reactions take place.
4 of 27
What is the role of the cell membrane?
Cell membrane holds the cell together and controls what chemicals go i and out of the cell.
5 of 27
What is the role of the mitochondria?
Mitochondria is where most of the reactions for respiration take place. Respiration releases energy that the cell needs for it to work. Its where sugars are broken down releasing energy.
6 of 27
What is the role of the rigid cell wall?
The rigid cell wall is made of cellulose which gives support for the cell/strengthens the cell.
7 of 27
What is the role of the large vacuole?
The large vacuole is made of cell sap, a weak solution of sugar and salts. It keeps the cell turgid.
8 of 27
What is the role of the chloroplasts?
The chloroplasts is where photosynthesis occurs. They contain a green substance called chlorophyll.
9 of 27
What don't bacterial cells have?
Bacterial cells have no nucleus.
10 of 27
How are bacterial cells different from plant and animal cells?
Bacterial cells are a lot smaller than plant and animal cells.
11 of 27
What do bacterial cells contain?
Chromosomal DNA, Plasmids, The Flagellum and Cell Wall.
12 of 27
What is the role of the chromosomal DNA?
Chromosomal DNA (one long circular chromosome) controls the cell's activities and replication. It floats free in the cytoplasm (not in a nucleus).
13 of 27
What is the role of plasmids?
Plasmids are small loops of extra DNA that aren't part of the chromosome. Plasmids contain gene
14 of 27
What is the role of the flagellum?
The flagellum (plural flagella) is a long hair-like structure that rotates to make the bacterium move.
15 of 27
What is the role of the cell wall?
The cell is supported by a cell wall.
16 of 27
How are cells studied?
Cells are studied using microscopes.
17 of 27
What is the role of microscopes?
Microscopes allow us to see things we can't see with the naked eye.
18 of 27
What are the two types of microscopes?
Light microscopes and electron microscopes.
19 of 27
What is passed in a light microscope?
In a light microscope a beam of light is passed through the cells.
20 of 27
What is passed in an electron microscope?
A beam of electrons is passed through the cells.
21 of 27
When were light microscopes invented?
Light microscopes were invented in the 1590s.
22 of 27
When were electron microscopes invented?
Electron microscopes were invented in the 1930s.
23 of 27
What is the role of a light microscope?
Light microscopes allow us to see things like nuclei, chloroplasts and mitochondria.
24 of 27
What is the role of an electron microscope?
Electron microscopes allow us to see much smaller in much more detail like the internal structure of mitochondria and chloroplasts, and even tinier things like plasmids.
25 of 27
What is magnification?
Magnification is how much bigger the image is than the specimen (the sample you're looking at).
26 of 27
What is the formula for working out the magnification?
Magnification = length of image/length of specimen.
