What is respiration?
The transfer of energy from the breakdown of glucose which goes into every cell.
1 of 12
What type reaction is respiration?
Exothermic - it transfers energy to the environment.
2 of 12
Name 3 ways respiration energy is used.
Large molecules are built up from smaller ones. Allows muscles to contract and expand.Mammals use it to preserve body temperature.
3 of 12
Give an exmaple, during metabolism for large molecules forming.
Glucose forms starch, (glycogen and cellulose). Lipid is then made fromglycerol and fatty acids.
4 of 12
Give an example, during metabolism when particles are broken down.
Glucose is broken down for respiration. Proteins are broken down to produce urea.
5 of 12
What is aerobic respiration?
Respiration using oxygen.
6 of 12
Where does respiration occur in plants?
Mitochondria
7 of 12
What is the equation for respiration?
C6H12O6 + 6O2 = 6CO2 + 6H2O
8 of 12
What is anaerobic respiration?
Respiration without oxygen.
9 of 12
What is the anaerobic equation in muscle cells?
glucose = lactic acid
10 of 12
What is the anaerobic equation in plant and yeast cells?
glucose = ethanol + carbon dioxide
11 of 12
What is fermentation?
Anaerobic respiration in yeast cells.
