Core Biology: Reflexes: Define "Reflex"
A reflex is an automatic (involuntary) response to a specific stimulus
1 of 7
What does a reflex action not involve?
The conscious part of the brain
2 of 7
What does the reflex action involve?
Involves the spinal cord/unconscious part of the brain only
3 of 7
Why do reflexes exist?
To increase an organisms chance of survival
4 of 7
Give 3 examples of a reflex action
Touching a hot object will bring about a muscle contraction reflex. Knee jerk, if something hits the knee it moves. Pupil constriction, pupils constrict when light is shone.
5 of 7
What is the reflex arc?
How the electrical impulse travels from a receptor to an effector
6 of 7
Describe the path an electrical impulse travels through for a reflex action
Starts with a recepor detecting stomulus, then travels through synapse to sensory neurone and then reaches relay in CNS via spinal cord. Transmitted to motor neurone then effector, either muscle or gland.
