?
What is ecology?
The scientific study of the relationships between living organisms and their environment.

What is an effector organ?
A muscle or gland that responds to impulses from the nervous system.
2 of 20
What is an embryonic stem cell?
A stem cell with the potential to form a number of different specialised cell types, which is taken from an early embryo.
3 of 20
What is an enzyme?
A protein molecule which acts as a biologist catalyst. It changes the rate of chemical reactions without being affected itself by the reaction.
4 of 20
What is an epidemic?
When more cases of an infectious disease are recorded than would normally be expected.
5 of 20
What is epidermal tissue?
The tissue of the epidermis - the outer layer of an organism.
6 of 20
What is epithelial tissue?
Tissue made up of relatively unspecialised cells which line the tubes and organs of the body.
7 of 20
What is evaporation?
The change of a liquid to a vapour at a temperature below its boiling point.
8 of 20
What is evaluation?
The process of slow change in living organisms over long periods of time as those best adapted to survive breed successfully.
9 of 20
What is an evolutionary relationship?
A model of the relationships between organisms, often based on DNA evidence, which suggest how long ago they evolved away from each other and how closely related they are in evolutionary terms.
10 of 20
What is an evolutionary tree?
A model of the evolutionary relationships between different organisms based on their appearance, and increasingly, on DNA evidence.
11 of 20
What is an exchange surface?
A surface where materials are exchanged.
12 of 20
What is extinction?
The permanent loss of all the members of a species.
13 of 20
What is an extremophile?
An organism which lives in environments that are very extreme, e.g. very high or very low temperatures, high salt levels or high pressures.
14 of 20
What are fatty acids?
The building blocks of lipids.
15 of 20
What is fermentation?
The reaction in which the enzymes in yeast turn glucose into ethanol and carbon dioxide.
16 of 20
What does fertile mean?
A fertile soil contains enough minerals e.g. nitrates, to supply the crop plants with all the nutrients needed for healthy growth.
17 of 20
What is a fertiliser?
A substance provided for plants that supplies them with essential nutrients for healthy growth.
18 of 20
What is fructose syrup?
A sugar syrup.
19 of 20
What is FSH?
