Biology (GCSE)- Summer term (Yr.10)

?
what is the equation for photosynthesis ?
carbon dioxide+water= oxygen+glucose
1 of 47
what type of reaction is photosynthesis ?
endothermic because it takes in energy from the surroundings
2 of 47
what type of reaction is respiration ?
exothermic because it releases energy stored in glucose
3 of 47
whats the equation for respiration ?
glucose+oxygen=carbon dioxide+water
4 of 47
what do plants use glucose for ?
to harden a cell wall by using cellouse which makes the plant grow tall, fruit, seeds, insoluble starch stored in potatoes, get minerals from soil, protein synthesis
5 of 47
what four things affect the rate of photosynthesis ?
sunlight, water, chlorophyll, carbon dioxide
6 of 47
draw the four graphs for the things above:
book 2
7 of 47
what adaptations does a green house have to help plant growth ?
clear glass to allow sunlight through, automatic watering system, electric lighting, paffin heater which controls temperature and gives off carbon dioxide
8 of 47
what is respiration ?
the release of energy, transfers energy from glucose
9 of 47
where does respiration happen ?
in every cell continously
10 of 47
what type of reaction is respiration ?
exothermic
11 of 47
where does aerobic respiration happen ?
in the mitochondria
12 of 47
what is the energy produced by photosynthesis used for ?
muscle contaction, keep warm and building large molecules
13 of 47
whats the equation for anaerobic respiration in yeast and bacteria ?
glucose= ethanol+carbon dioxide
14 of 47
what is oxygen debt ?
the amount of oxygen the body needs after oxygen to repay the lactic acid build up
15 of 47
what is anaerobic respiration in yeast called ?
fermentation, used to make alcohol and bread
16 of 47
what is the law of limiting factors ?
when a process depends on two or more factors, the rate of that process is limited by the factor which is in shortest supply
17 of 47
what does the rate of photosynthesis depend on ?
light intensity, carbon dioxide, chlorophyll, temperature
18 of 47
what does metabolism mean ?
all the chemical reactions that happen in a cell or body
19 of 47
what does metabolic rate mean ?
the speed at which the chemical reactions in your cells use energy
20 of 47
what things affect metabolic rate ?
age, older the slower,- more exercise, higher- more muscle to fat, faster- males higher than females
21 of 47
how do you measure fitness ?
by measuring your resting heart and breathing rate then do exersize and the shorter amount of time it takes for the rates to return to normal the fitter you are
22 of 47
how does exercise affect the heart and lungs ?
heart- becomes stronger, arteries widen, lowers resting heart rate. lungs- increase in volume
23 of 47
draw graph from book two and explain
000
24 of 47
define competition
trying to win or gain something by deafting others
25 of 47
what do animals compete for ?
food, water, teritoy, mates
26 of 47
what do plants compete for ?
light, water, space, minerals
27 of 47
define interspecific competition
competition between two different species
28 of 47
define habitat
place where an organism lives
29 of 47
define population
all of the organisms of one species living in a habitat
30 of 47
define community
populations of different species living in a habitat
31 of 47
define a abiotic factor
non living factors of the environment eg. temp
32 of 47
define a biotic factor
living factors of the environment eg, food
33 of 47
define ecosystem
the interaction of a community of living organism with the non living parts of their environment
34 of 47
what is a structural adaptation ?
features of an organisms body structure eg, shape or colour, artic animals have white fur so theyre camoflauged
35 of 47
what is a behavioral adaptation ?
ways an organism behaves, eg, birds migrate to aviod living probelms to do with weather
36 of 47
what is a functional adaptation ?
things which go on inside an organisms body that can be related to reproduction or metabolism eg, desernt animals consereve water by producing little sweat and small concentrated amounts of urine
37 of 47
define extremeophile
an organism which is adapted to live in extreme conditions, thermococus litoralis lives in the deep sea with temperatures of 85-88 degrees
38 of 47
define predator
consumers which hunt and kill other animals
39 of 47
define biomass
the mass of organic matter in an organism
40 of 47
define producer
plants=start of the food chain
41 of 47
what is the difference between a pyramid of numbers and a pyramid of biomass?
pyramid of numbers isnt always a pyramid shape but pyramid of biomass is
42 of 47
define trophic
feeding level on a food chain
43 of 47
define food chain
sequence showing feeding relationships
44 of 47
define consumer
organism which eats other organisms
45 of 47
