Biology component two...Adaptations for Plant Transport

The topic where how plants are adapted to the environment of today (whether in extremely high, low or moderate climates)..in component two.

HOPE U FIND THIS USEFUL...

?
What is the word equation for photosynthesis?
carbon dioxide+water-->sunlight+chlorophyll=oxygen + glucose
1 of 13
what does the structure of the root contain within the stele?
xylem, phloem and the pericycle
2 of 13
explain the 3 pathways that water and mineral ions take through the cortex to the xylem
Apoplast pathway-the route that involves water moving between spaces in the cellulose cell wall...Symplast pathway -water moves through the cytoplasm and plasmodesmata...Vacuolar pathway- involves water passing from vacuole to vacuole
3 of 13
what are the walls of the endodermis coated with? and why is this a problem?
suberin... the apoplast pathway is blocked ...only the symplast pathway is accesible
4 of 13
what components make up the structure of the xylem?...phloem?
xylem=vessels continuous column of hollow dead cells conduct water flow+tracheidssimilar to vessels but with tapered ends and more elongated, allow for sideways movement of water (has lignin)...phloem=sieve tubes-bidirectional movement+companion cell
5 of 13
what is the definition of translocation?
translocation is the transport of souble organic materials produced by photosynthesis in the phloem.
6 of 13
what is a source? what is a sink? give examples for both...
source=where photosythates are produced and exported(leaf)...sink=where photosythates are stored or used for growth (roots/shoots)
7 of 13
what experimental evidence is there to prove the bidirectional movement in the phloem?
ringing experiments...aphid experiments...radio isotope labelling
8 of 13
what is the definition of transpiration?
the evaporation of water from inside the leaf (mesophyll) out of the stomata into the atmostphere
9 of 13
what are the factors affecting transpiration?
humidity... light intensity...temperature (increase)... wind speed
10 of 13
what are the adaptations of Mesophytes?
deciduous plants- shed leaves during winter & regrow in spring...Non woody plants-produce cormbs and bulbs to store sugar when leaves and flowers die off ...Annual plants-during winter they are dormant but they reproduce and make seeds beforehand
11 of 13
what are the adaptations of Hydrophytes?
little lignin in plant...xylem tissue is poorly developed...leaves have a thin waxy cuticle...stomata found on upper epidermis...stems and leaves have LARGE air spaces
12 of 13
what are the adaptations of Xerophytes?
rolled leaves...sunken stomata...hairs on the surface of the leaf... thick waxy cuticle.
