Pathogens
-Microorganisms that enter the body and cause disease
-Cause communicable disease
-Can be bacteria, virus, protists or fungi
-Infect animals and plants
1 of 12
Bacteria
-Reproduce rapidly
-Produce toxins that damage cells and tissues
2 of 12
Viruses
-Reproduce rapidly inside your body
-Live inside your cells and replicate themselves
-Cell will burst releasing all the viruses
-This cell damage causes you to feel ill
3 of 12
Protists
-Mostly single-celled
-All eukaryotes
-Some are parasites
4 of 12
Parasite
-Live on or in other organisms and can cause damage
-often transferred to the organism by a vector
5 of 12
Vector
Organism that does not cause or catch disease but spreads it by conveying pathogens from one host to another
6 of 12
How do fungi cause disease?
-Some fungi have a body made from hyphae
-Hyphae can grow and penetrate human skin and surface of plants causing disease
-Hyphae can produce spores which can spread to other plants or animals
7 of 12
How are pathogens spread?
-WATER e.g cholera is a bacterial infection spread by drinking contaminated water
-AIR e.g influenza virus is carried in air in droplets produced from sneezing or coughing -DIRECT CONTACT e.g athletes foot can be
spread by tou
8 of 12
3 examples of viral disease
-Measles
-HIV
-Tobacco Mosaic Virus
9 of 12
Example of disease caused by protist
Malaria (mosquito is vector)
10 of 12
2 Examples of bacterial disease
-Salmonella
-Gonorrhoea
11 of 12
How do you prevent or reduce spread of disease?
(4 ways)
1) Being hygienic - e.g washing hands after you’ve sneezed can stop you infecting another person
2) Destroying vectors - prevents disease being passed on e.g using insecticides or destroying insects habitats
3) Isolating infected individuals - prevents
