What is the plasma membrane?
The type of membrane around and within all cells. Plasma membranes have a basic structure and only differ in the substances they contain.
1 of 5
What is a cell surface membrane?
Refers to the plasma membrane that surrounds a cell and forms a boundary between the cell cytoplasm and the surrounding environment.
2 of 5
What are the functions of a cell surface membrane?
Allows different conditions to exist inside and outside the cell; Controls the movement of substances in and out the cell.
3 of 5
What makes up a cell surface membrane?
Phospholipids, proteins, cholesterol, glycoproteins and glycolipids.
4 of 5
What do phospholipids do in the cell surface membrane?
Phospholipids form a bilayer 7-10nm in length; hydrophobic phosphate heads point outward
