total lung capacity
the inspiratory capacity plus the functional residual capacity; the volume of air contained in the lungs at the end of a maximal inspiration; also equals vital capacity plus residual volume.
1 of 6
vital capacity
the greatest volume of air that can be expelled from the lungs after taking the deepest possible breath.
2 of 6
tidal volume
The amount of air which enters the lungs during normal inhalation at rest. The average tidal volume is 500ml. The same amount leaves the lungs during exhalation
3 of 6
inspiratory reserve volume
The amount of extra air inhaled (above tidal volume) during a deep breath.
4 of 6
expiratory reserve volume
the additional amount of air that can be expired from the lungs by determined effort after normal expiration
5 of 6
functional residual capacity
is the volume of air present in the lungs at the end of passive expiration. At FRC, the opposing elastic recoil forces of the lungs and chest wall are in equilibrium and there is no exertion by the diaphragm or other respiratory muscles.
