Biodiversity
The quantity and range of living beings/species
1 of 13
Biodiversity hotspot
A wide range and quantity of species/living beings in a particular area/ecosystem
2 of 13
Components of biodiversity
Species biodiversity (number of different species and abundance of each species), genetic biodiversity (genetic variation between members of a species) and ecosystem diversity (variety of different habitats in an ecosysten)
3 of 13
Endemism
When a species is unique to a single place e.g. giant tortoise is endemic to the Galapagos Islands
4 of 13
Reduction in biodiversity would affect...
Food, beverages, medicine and building materials
5 of 13
The threats to biodiversity are...
Climate change, hunting, pollution, habitat loss (from deforestation, building, farming and dumping waste), invasion from foreign spaces and population growth
6 of 13
The effects of population growth:
Increase in pollution and climate change, more space (causing habitat loss), food (causing deforestation and reducing species diversity) and medicines (more drugs will be needed from the environment, reducing biodiversity) will be needed
7 of 13
What people require to remain a healthy species:
Good healthcare (medicine), food, clean water, exercise, education, shelter and waste management
8 of 13
Ways in which human activities impact the environment:
Carbon footprint/pollution (causes global warming), deforestation, overfishing/hunting, using non-renewable sources (e.g. oil), littering plastic (lack of decomposition) and releasing waste into oceans.
9 of 13
How humans pollute water:
Sewage, toxic chemicals and oil spills and fertilisers and pesticides that seep into water sources (or infiltrate through soil and runoff into a river)
10 of 13
How humans pollute air:
Carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide (from cars) and sulfur dioxide (from factories) emissions
11 of 13
How humans pollute land:
Deforestation for personal benefits, littering and nuclear waste
12 of 13
Eutrophication
The enrichment of a water source with excess nutrients
