What is in the Circulatory System?
The blood, blood vessels and the heart. It transports substances to and from the body cells.

What is Plasma for?
Plasma has blood cells suspended in it and transports protiens and other chemicals around the body.

What are Red Blood Cells for?
Red Blood Cells contain haemoglobin that binds to oxygen to transport it from the lungs to the tissues.

What are White Blood Cells for?
White Blood Cells help to protect the body against infection.

What are Platelets for?
Platelets are cell fragments that start the clotting process at wound sites.

What are Veins for?
Veins carry blood away from the orgains towards your heart. It's usually low in oxygen and so are a deep purple red. They have valves to prevent backflow.

What are Arteries for?
Arteries carry blood away from your heart to the organs in your body. Bright red oxygenated blood.

What are Capillaries for?
Capillaries form a huge network of tiny vessels linking the arteries to the veins. Oxygen and glucose diffuse out of them into cells. Cells diffuse Carbon Dioxide back.

The heart as a pump?
Beats about 70 times a minute. Two sides of the heart fill and empty at the same time to give a strong heartbeat. The Blood enters the top chambers which are the atria. Ventricles contract and force blood out of the heart.

Different role in the heart
Vena cava brings deoxygenated blood to heart. Pulmonary atery take deoxygenated blood to lungs. Aorta carries oxygenated blood around the body. Pulmonary vein brings oxygenated blood from lungs.

Problems with blood flow in the heart
In coronary heart disease the coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle become narrow. Common cause - build up of fatty material on lining of the vessels. Causes pain, a heart attack and even death.

What are stents?
Stents (metal mesh) can be used to keep narrow or blocked up arteries open.

What are statins?
Statins reduce cholesterol levels in the blood, reducing the risk of coronary heart disease.

What happens to leaky valves?
They can be replaced using biological or mechanical valves.

How is heart rate controlled?
Your heart rate is controlled by a group of cells in the right atrium that form a natrual pacemaker. Sometimes they stop working so artificial pacemakers which sned strong, regular electrical impulses to the heart, are used.

When are artifial hearts used?
Artificial hearts are occasionally used to keep patients alive while they wait for a transport or for their heart to rest as an aid to recovery.
