define: osmosis

intercoastal muscles contract, ribs move up and out, the diaphram flattens, volume of the thorax increases, prssure of the thorax decreases

intercoastal muscles relax, ribs move down and in, diaphram becomes doomed, the volume in the thorax decreases, the pressure in the thorax increases

damaged alveoli (surface area for gas exchange is reduced), if the tubes leading to the lungs are norrowed less air can then move through the, if a person is paralysed( their muscles will not work to pull the ribs up and out)

used for people who are paralysed, the person lay on their chest and a large metal cylinder draws air out this forces the chest to go up and out, the vacuum which is formed in the cylinder creats a negative pressure.
