Biology B3 2.1 The circulatory system and the heart.

HideShow resource information
What does the double circulation system in humans consist of?
Blood vessels, blood and the heart.
1 of 16
What is the heart?
The heart is the muscular organ that pumps blood around the body. It is actually two pumps held together.
2 of 16
What do the valves in the heart do?
Prevent back flow of blood, therefore preventing blood from flowing in the wrong direction.
3 of 16
What do large organisms need to move materials around the body?
A transport system.
4 of 16
What consists of blood vessels, the heart and blood in humans?
The circulatory system.
5 of 16
What does the right pump do?
It forces deoxygenated blood to the lungs where it picks up oxygen and loses carbon dioxide.
6 of 16
What happens after blood returns from the lungs back to the heart?
The oxygenated blood is pumped to the rest of the body by the left pump.
7 of 16
How many chambers does the heart have?
Four.
8 of 16
What are the upper chambers of the heart called?
The atria.
9 of 16
Where do the atria receive blood from?
The vena cava on the right side and pulmonary vein on the left.
10 of 16
Why do the atria contract?
To move blood into the lower chambers.
11 of 16
What are the lower chambers of the heart called?
The ventricles.
12 of 16
What happens when the ventricles contract?
They force blood into the pulmonary artery from the right side and into the aorta on the left side.
13 of 16
How is the heart muscle supplied with oxygenated blood?
Through the coronary arteries.
14 of 16
What does the action of the two sides of the heart result in?
A double circulation.
