The surface area of the lungs is increased by the alveoli (air sacs).

To maintain a steep diffusion gradient.

What happens to oxygen and carbon dioxide in the lungs?
Oxygen diffuses into the many capillaries surrounding the alveoli and carbon dioxide diffuses back out into the lungs to be breathed out.
