Biology B2 3.6 High-tech enzymes.

?
What are the advantages of using enzymes in industry and the home?
Enzymes in biological washing powders are effective at lower temperatures which saves energy and reduces costs, they also effectively remove stains, e.g. blood, grass, gravy; some enzymes are used in medicine to diagnose, control or even cure disease
1 of 6
What are the disadvantages of using enzymes in industry and the home?
Misuse of washing powders may lead to allergic reactions; enzymes may enter waterways via the sewage system; industrial enzymes can be costly to produce; enzymes denature at high temperatures, some fabrics such as wool will be digested by protease.
2 of 6
How might washing powders cause allergies?
If people misuse washing powders they may have allergic reactions on their skin. The enzymes are enclosed in capsules in the dry powder. Once the powder is dissolved, hands should not be placed in the water.
3 of 6
Why is it a disadvantage that enzymes denature in washing powders at high temperatures?
High temperatures are needed to kill pathogens in the washing.
4 of 6
How do enzymes get into rivers?
Water from dishwashers and washing machines passes into the sewage system and may eventually reach the rivers.

**TO IMPROVE YOUR GRADE MAKE SURE YOU UNDERSTAND HOW ENZYMES WORK AND WHAT FACTORS AFFECT THEM. PRACTICE READING GRAPHS RELATING TO ENZYME INVESTIGATIONS. NEARLY EVERY EXAM HAS AN ENZYME**
