Biology B2 3.2 Factors affecting enzyme action.

?
How do factors which alter the shape of the active site affect the enzyme?
Factors which alter the shape of the active site prevent the enzyme from working.
1 of 10
What is enzyme activity affected by?
Temperature and pH.
2 of 10
How are enzyme reactions affected by temperature?
They are similar to other reactions when the temperature is increased.
3 of 10
In what way are enzyme reactions similar to other reactions when the temperature is increased?
Reactions take place faster when it is warmer.
4 of 10
Why do reactions take place faster when it is warmer?
At higher temperatures the molecules move around more quickly and so collide with each other more often and with more energy.
5 of 10
What happens if the temperature gets too hot?
The enzyme stops working because the active site changes shape, we say that the enzyme becomes denatured.
6 of 10
How does the pH value affect how well and enzyme works?
Each enzyme works best at a particular pH value. Some work best in acid conditions, such as the stomach, but others need neutral or alkaline conditions.
7 of 10
What happens if the pH is too acidic or alkaline for the enzyme?
Then the active site could change shape and the enzyme becomes denatured.
8 of 10
What is meant by the term 'denatured'?
The protein/enzyme changes shape and will stop working.
