Explain the levels of organisation
Organelle - cell - tissue - organ - organ system
1 of 6
What is a tissue?
a tissue is a group of similar cells that work together to carry out a particular function. can include more than one type of cell.
2 of 6
explain what is meant by the term organ system?
an organ system is a group of organs working together to perform a particular function.
3 of 6
why can enzymes be described as biological catalysts?
A catalyst is a substance which increases the speed of a reaction, without being changed or used up in the reaction. Enzymes reduce the need for high temperatures, they speed up the useful chemical reactions in the body.
4 of 6
why do enzymes usually only catalyse one reaction?
For enzymes to work the substance has to fit into its active site. if the substance doesn't match the enzymes active site, then the reaction won't be catalysed. 'lock and key diagram'
5 of 6
what does it mean when an enzyme has been denatured?
temperature increases the rate of reaction at first, but if it gets too hot, one of the bonds holding the enzyme together break. This changes the shape of the enzymes active site, substrate won't fit anymore.
