Biology B1 2.1 Responding to change.

?
What does the nervous system do?
Allows humans to react to their surroundings and coordinates behaviour.
1 of 17
What do receptors do?
Detect external stimuli.
2 of 17
What passes to the brain along neurons?
Electrical impulses.
3 of 17
What does the brain coordinate?
Responses to many stimuli.
4 of 17
What are neurons?
Nerve cells which are found in nerves and carry electrical impulses.
5 of 17
What does the nervous system have?
Receptors to detect stimuli.
6 of 17
Where are receptors found?
In sense organs, the eye, ear, nose, tongue and skin.
7 of 17
What stimulates receptors in the eye and what is the result?
Light stimulates receptors in the eye and electrical impulses then pass to the brain along neurons (nerve cells).
8 of 17
What other stimuli stimulates receptors in the sense organs?
Sound, chemicals, temperature changes, touch and pain.
9 of 17
What do the brain and spinal cord form?
The central nervous system (CNS).
10 of 17
What do nerves contain?
Neurons.
11 of 17
What do sensory neurons do?
Carry electrical impulses from receptors to the central nervous system (CNS).
12 of 17
What do motor neurons do?
Carry impulses from the central nervous system (CNS) to effector organs which may be muscles or glands.
13 of 17
How do muscles respond to impulses carried by motor neurons from the central nervous system (CNS) ?
By contracting.
14 of 17
How do glands respond to impulses carried by motor neurons from the central nervous system (CNS)?
By secreting (releasing) chemicals.
15 of 17
What stimuli are detected by the sense organs?
Light, sound, chemicals, touch, pain and temperature change.
16 of 17
How do impulses pass from the receptor to the central nervous system (CNS)?
As electrical impulses along a sensory neuron.
