What is the structure of a Triglycerides?
One molecule of glycerol with 3 fatty acids attached to it.
1 of 8
Why do fatty acids have 'tails'?
There are made of hydrocarbons, which are hydrophobic ( REPEL WATER MOLECULES) The tails make lipids insoluble in water.
2 of 8
What are triglycerides formed by?
Condensation reactions. When the ester bond is formed, a water molecule is released. THIS HAPPENS 3 TIMES.
3 of 8
What are saturated fatty acids?
They don't have double bonds between their carbon atoms. It is saturated with hydrogen.
4 of 8
What are unsaturated fatty acids?
They have at least one double bond between carbon atoms, which cause the chain to kink.
5 of 8
Why is there long tails good for energy storage?
They contain lots of chemical energy. When they are broken down, loads of energy is released.
6 of 8
Why is Triglycerides being insoluble a good thing?
They don't affect water potential. The triglycerides clump together as insoluble droplets
7 of 8
How do you test for Lipids?
Emulsion test-> shake the substance with ethanol for about a minute, then pour the solution into water and any lipid will show up as a milky solution.
