Enzymes are biological catalysts which allow the chemical reactions in the body to occur
1 of 10
What is a catalyst?
A catalyst is a substance which INCREASES the speed of a reaction, without being changed or used up in the reaction.
2 of 10
Why does every enzyme have a unique shape?
so that only a certain substance can enter the active site to react.
3 of 10
What is respiration?
The process of releasing energy from glucose, which goes on in every cell.
4 of 10
What is the word equation for AEROBIC respiration?
Glucose + oxygen ---> carbon dioxide + water + ENERGY
5 of 10
What is the word equation for ANAEROBIC respiration?
Glucose ---> energy + lactic acid
6 of 10
What is ANAEROBIC respiration?
Anaerobic is the incomplete breakdown of glucose which produces lactic acid which builds up in the muscles
7 of 10
What does ANAEROBIC respiration lead to?
It will lead to oxygen debt when you stop exercising
8 of 10
Give some disadvantages of anaerobic respiration?
Does not release nearly as much energy as aerobic respiration, its only useful in emergency situations. It causes muscle fatigue - muscles become tired and do not contract efficiently
9 of 10
Give one advantage of anaerobic respiration?
it allows you to keep using your muscles for a while longer after the blood cant keep up the demand for oxygen
