What are Organic Compounds?
compounds that are made up of carbon and other elements such as oxygen and hydrogen, eg carbohydrates and lipids
1 of 7
What is most common organic compound on earth?
Cellulose
2 of 7
How do you test for starch?
Using iodine solution. If the solution turns blue- black, starch is present.
3 of 7
Give 3 examples of lipids
Steroid hormones, Cholesterol, Vitamin A and D
4 of 7
Describe monosaccarides.
Monosaccharides are the simplest types of carbohydrates. The number of carbon atoms can be from three to seven. The carbons are joined to a hydroxyl group (-OH). Some examples are: ribose, glucose, fructose and galactose.
5 of 7
How is a disaccharide formed?
Two monosaccharide monomers are linked together by a condensation reaction which forms a glycosidic bond producing a disaccharide, releasing one water molecule.
6 of 7
What are the two different forms of glucose molecules?
Glucose is a monosaccharide that exists in two forms: D-glucose and L-glucose. They are isomers meaning they have the same chemical formula but a slightly different arrangement of the atoms.
