Give one sense organ that an athelete is relying on at the start of a race, and state the type of receptors it uses.
The ears, they contain the sound and balance receptors.
1 of 20
What is the difference between motor neurones and sensory neurons?
Sensory neurones carry impulses from receptors to the CNS. Motor neurones carry impulses from the CNS to the effectors (muscles and glands).
2 of 20
Explain how a nerve signal passes from one neurone to the next.
The nerve signal is transferred by chemicals that diffuse across the synapse and set off a new electrical signal in the next neurone.
3 of 20
Why might an athelete use steroids?
-To increase muscle size, etc
4 of 20
Give one negative health effect of using steroids.
-High blood pressure, etc
5 of 20
What is the length of the complete menstrual cycle shown?
30 days
6 of 20
What happens on day 16 of this woman's cycle?
An egg is released (ovulation).
7 of 20
Oestrogen is one of the main hormones that control the menstrual cycle. Name another hormone involved.
-FSH -LH -Progesterone
8 of 20
Explain how the oestrogen in the contraceptive pill prevents pregnancy.
Oestrogen inhibits the production of FSH, which stops egg development and production.
9 of 20
Name three ways that water is lost from our body.
-Through the skin as sweat. -Via the lungs in breath. -Via the kidneys as urine.
10 of 20
Explain why the amount of urine that people produce can depend on the air temperature.
If the air is hotter then more water will be lost through sweat so less urine will be produced.
11 of 20
Why are drugs tested on animals before they can be used in clinical trials?
To see whether the drug works, to find out its toxicity and the best dosage to use.
12 of 20
List three factors that can give you an indication of how reliable a scientific report is.
Published in a respectable journal, written by a qualified person, written by someone who may be biased, how large a sample was used.
13 of 20
How do hormones travel around the body?
In the blood.
14 of 20
Where in a plant is the hormone Auxin produced?
At the tips of the shoots and the roots.
15 of 20
Describe the difference between how auxin affects cells in the shoots and in the roots of plants.
In shoots, auxin makes the cells grow faster. In the roots, auxin slows cell growth.
16 of 20
Name one use of auxin in agriculture.
Weedkiller, etc.
17 of 20
What has happened in the clear zone labelled on the diagram?
The bacteria have been killed by the antibiotic.
18 of 20
Which of the antibiotics (1-6) was the most effective against the bacteria?
Antibiotic 3.
19 of 20
Would this antibiotic also work against the flu, or a common cold? Explain your answer.
No, flu and colds are cause by viruses and antibiotics don't kill viruses.
