Key Concepts in Biology

?
What can organisms be?
eukaryotes or prokaryotes
1 of 14
What is the difference between a eukaryote and a prokaryote?
A eukaryote cells are complex and include all animal and plant cells. Whereas prokaryotes are smaller and simpler e.g bacteria.
2 of 14
What are the subcellular structures in an animal cell?
Animal cells contain a nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, mitochondria and ribosomes.
3 of 14
What are the subcellular structures in a plant cell?
Nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, cell wall, chloroplasts, vacuole, ribosomes and mitochondria.
4 of 14
What is the function of the nucleus?
It controls the activities in the cell, it contains genetic material which is arranged in chromosomes.
5 of 14
What subcellular structure in a plant cell contains cell sap, a weak solution of sugar and salts and maintains the internal pressure to support the cell?
The large vacuole.
6 of 14
What subcellular structure is a jelly-like substance where most chemical reactions happen and have enzymes that control the chemical reactions?
In the cytoplasm which is in both plant and animal cells.
7 of 14
What takes place in the mitochondria?
the mitochondria produces energy for respiration to occur. It also where most of the reactions happen for respiration take place.
8 of 14
What does the ribosomes do?
Ribosomes are involved in the translation of genetic material this is also where protein synthesis happens.
9 of 14
What is the function of the cell membrane and cell wall?
The cell membrane controls what goes in and out of the cell and holds it together. The cell wall which is only in the plant cell is made of cellulose and supports and strengthens the cell.
10 of 14
Where does photosynthesis occur in a plant cell?
The chloroplasts, they contain a green substance called chlorophyll/
11 of 14
Describe a bacterial cell
A bacterial cell is a prokaryote, it has no nucleus. It has ribosomes, cell membrane, chromosomal DNA, plasmid DNA, and a flagellum.
12 of 14
What is the function of a flagellum?
It is a long, hair-like structure that moves the bacteria away from harmful substances like toxins, towards more beneficial things like nutrients.
13 of 14
What is plasmid DNA?
Extra DNA that contains genes for things like drug resistance and ca be passed between bacteria.
