Research into helping understand the disruption of bio rhythms has REAL LIFE APPLICATIONS! Sharkey(2001) reported on the effects of melatonin in reducing the time required to adjust to new shifts.

Lifespan changes in sleep.
Floyd et al.(2007) reviewed nearly 400 sleep studies and found that REM sleep decreased by about 0.6% a decade. After 70 however, the proportion of REM increased..but less sleep?

Lifespan changes in sleep(2).
Borbely et al. questioned adults aged 65 to 83 on their sleeping habits, finding that 60% of them reported taking frequent daily naps. Borbely also warns about generalising sleep patterns to age groups. Individual differences!

Functions of sleep. YES!!!!
Predator pray sleep(Meddis). Hibernation Theory(Webb) Allison and Cicchetti(1976) found prey sleep less than predators...so meddis's theory doesn't make sense?! However lesku et al pointed out, prey are usually herbivores. Takes longer to eat.

Functions of sleep 2. YEEEEEESSSSS!!!!
Oswald(1980) restoration theory. REM is for brain restoration. SWS is for body repair. Shapiro et al. provided evidence to support this. Shapiro et al found that long distance athletes after running a marathon, slept for longer. + Had a higher REM %.

Explanations for sleep disorders - Insomnia
Primary. Psychophysiological, idiopathic(childhood) and sleep state misperception. Dement reported on several cases of sleep state misperception, including one man who reported a mean time of 90 minutes to fall asleep. In reality it took 15 minutes.

Explanations for sleep disorders - Insomnia 2
Secondary insomnia. Eg. Caused by...Alcohol, illness, shift work, stimulants. Monti(2004) found that many cases of insomnia could be treated by treating the underlying cause, providing proof for the existence of secondary insomnia.

Explanations for sleep disorders - Sleepwalking.
Sleep deprivation. Is this the cause? Zadra et al(2008) kept participants awake in a sleep lab for over 25 hours. It was found that during the first night of sleep, 50 percent of patients exhibited sleepwalking episodes.

Explanations for sleep disorders - Genetics?
Broughton, found that the disorder is hereditary, with sufferers 10x more likely than the general ppulation to have a close relative with the disorder. Lecendreux et al.(2003) found concordance of 50% among MZ twins and only 12% with DZ's. Evaluate!
