How many stages of sleep are there?
4 stages then the cycle repeats

Stage 1
lowered heart rate, muscle tension and temperature. Easy to wake people from it

Stage 2
slower and larger EEG waves, some quick bursts of high frequency waves called sleep spindles

Stage 3
even longer slower waves

largest waves, low metabolic rate

reverses through 3,2 then 1

Evolutionary theory
Webb- sleep occurs most when resources are hard to come by(similar to hibernation. Meddis- sleep keeps them safe, dud to not attracting the attention of predators. small, hunted animals sleep more than predators

Restoration theory
Oswald- non-rem is for physical resotarion whilst rem is for brain. Horne- two different types of sleep, core which is made up of stage 4 SWS for body rest and REM for brain and optimum sleep which is the other stages this is not necassary sleep
