Which 3 topics are explored?
Serotonin , Dopamine + Birth compilations
1 of 13
What is the role of serotonin?
Controls mood ,apetite , sex drive + thirst. Controls levels of anxiety - with AN a person has high anxiety levels + so eats less in order to lower serotonin and have more control over anxiety
2 of 13
What is the role of dopamine?
controls reward/pleasure. High-flattening effect. Increased dopamine activity in basal ganglia alters the way people interpret rewards,so individuals with AN find it hard to associate gd feelings with things that are usually pleasurable (food)
3 of 13
Bailer et al
Found higher levels of serotonin in those recovering from AN
4 of 13
Kaye et al (serotonin)
SSRIs are given to people with AN to lower the serotonin levels , but only works on those recovering from AN. Suggests have to reach a certain homeostatic level b4 they work
5 of 13
NICE (national institute of health + care excellence)
Suggests that SSRIs should not be used to treat those with AN because a side effect of SSRIs is a change in appetite which could mean a loss , therefore worsening the original problem
6 of 13
Kaye et al (dopamine)
Compared 10 recovering from AN + 12 healthy women. PET scan + found that higher activity in dopamine receptors in basal ganglia
7 of 13
Castro-Fornieles et al
In young girls with AN - high levels of homovanillic acid which is a waste product of dopamine - suggests high levels
8 of 13
Wang et al
In obese people they found low levels of dopamine - shows maybe we underestimate the role of dopamine in weight control - has a bigger role than we thought

2 ways in which birth compilations can affect child?
1. genetic predisposition if mother has it 2. child will be deprived of food
10 of 13
Bulik et al
Having a mother with AN - the child is at a double disadvantage : lack of food + genetic vulnerability

Lindberg + Hjern
Found significant association btwn premature birth + development of AN

Implication
Research is carried out in this area in order to try and understand the root cause of AN in order to help those with AN + invent a cure
