Biological Approach

?
What is the first assumption of the Biological Approach?
1)There's a close link between brain & behaviour. 2)Thoughts & emotions are based on electrical messages which are carried around the brain by neurotransmitters ie.serotonin & dopamine 3)The level of these chemicals can shape behav eg.low sero=depres

What is the second assumption of the Biological Approach?
1)There's a close link between genes & behaviour. 2)The genes we inherit will create a predisposition to behave in a certain way. 3)Eg. mental disorders ie schizophrenia may be shaped by genes such as DISC1 & G72.

What is the aim of Selye's General Adaption Syndrome?
Describes how the body adapts to stress. Selye thought these physiological responses to stress were universal (same for all) & general (same response for all stress). Based his theory on lab rats' response to stess ie extreme temp/drugs(morphine)

What are 3 stages of GAS?
Alarm, Resistance and Exhaustion
4 of 16
What happens in the alarm stage of GAS?
Stressor activates the hypothalamus which triggers the HPA axis and the ANS-causes adrenaline production which leads to readiness for 'fight' or 'flight'.Physiological reactions- ^ HR & BR, release of sugars-generate energy. If stress goes body=normal
5 of 16
What happens in the resistance stage of GAS?
Adrenaline & cortisol produced.Attempting to adapt to the stressor, PNS cuts in- body appears to cope. Elevated hormone levels take control-body cant resist.Physiological reactions include ^ BP &sugars stored.HPA axis governs physiological responses
6 of 16
What happens in the exhaustion stage of GAS?
Hormone levels remain high-cant cope.Physiological reactions=damaged adrenal glands & weekened immune system. Defences become less effective & illnesses occur (heart disease/ulcers). Selyes rats die. GAS suggests stress is a bio response to change in

What is the main assumption of the Biological Approach (chemotherapy)?
There is a close link between brain chemicals & behav. Nor behav=brain chemicals are balanced & ab behav= imbalance of chemicals.Directly links to chemo which aims to make ab nor by using drugs to alter the levels of neurotrans in brain egProzac^sero
8 of 16
What is the first stage in chemotherapy?
Therapist diagnoses patient based on symptoms using DSM. eg Suicidal thinking=diagnosis of depression. Hallucinations=diagnosis of schizophrenia.
9 of 16
What is the second stage in chemotheraphy?
A course of drugs will be prescribed. SSRIs (preventing reuptake), Chlorpromazine (bind to receptors), Betablockers (reduce HR). Dosage and side effects discussed. Placebo (is it drug or psychological?)
10 of 16
How do drugs work that prevent reuptake of chemicals in the brain?
Raise the level of certain neurotransmitters by blocking reuptake of chemicals in the brain. Eg. SSRIs such as Prozac work by blocking the reuptake of serotonin, thus improving mood in someone with depression.
11 of 16
How do drugs work that bind to receptors?
The bind to receptors thus lowering the level of certain chemicals. Eg. Chlorpromazine is an anti psychotic which works by binding to D2 receptors, thus lowering the level of dopamine in someone with schizophrenia.
12 of 16
How do Anti-anxiety drugs work?
Such as Betablockers work by reducing the level of adrenaline in the body, thus lowering heart rate.
13 of 16
What is the final stage of chemotherapy?
The patient returns to discus whether the drug has altered their behaviour eg suicidal thoughts gone? Dosage may be changed or a new drug introduced. Side effects/addiction disscused eg. 30% of people on anti psychotics experience tardive dyskinesia
14 of 16
What is the success rate of chemotherapy and who suggested it?
Viguera (2000) reported that lithium was effective in treating bipolar disorder in over 60% of cases.Extream levels of serotonin which cause bipolar are treated using chemo which restores the balance of serotonin, reducing the depressive symptoms.
15 of 16
What is the conclusion statement for chemotherapy?
This illustrates how the assumptions of the biological approach have been successfully applied to chemotherapy to treat abnormal behaviour.
