?
Assumption 1 = Behaviour is Explained in Terms of Different Areas of the Brain
Different areas of the brain perform specialist functions. If those areas of the brain are damaged the person usually loses that particular function. (E.g. hippocampus deals with forming memories - damage prevents this)
1 of 8
Assumption 2 = Behaviour is Explained by Hormones
Hormones = chemical substances that circulate in the blood only affecting target organs. (large quantities but used quickly) Effects are slow (compared to nervous system) but powerful. = E.g. adrenaline -> fight or flight
2 of 8
Theory = Selye's GAS Theory
1) ALARM REACTION = stressor -> response (hypothalamus sends adrenal glands signal for adrenaline). 2) RESISTANCE = body maintains normal function as way of coping (e.g. temp. regulation). 3) EXHAUSTION = normal functions not maintained (immune=CHD)
3 of 8
GAS Research
SELYE (1936) = Rats in cold, drugs, exercise, cut spinal cords. STAGE 1 = physiological triad. STAGE 2 = return to near normal. STAGE 3 = 1-3 months return of physiological triad
4 of 8
Therapy = Psychosurgery
LINK = alleviate symptoms by destroying areas of brain causing behaviour.
