Test for reducing sugars
Add equal volume of Benedicts reagent to sample. Heat in gently boiling water bath for five minutes. Turns orange-brown if positive.

Test for non-reducing sugars
Perform test for reducing sugars. Add 2cm of hydrochloric acid to a new 2cm sample. Slowly add sodium hydrogencarbonate. Reperform reducing sugars test. Should be positive.

Test for starch
Add 2 drops of iodine solution to 2cm of sample and shake/stir. Turns blue-black if positive.

Test for lipids
Add 5cm of ethanol to 2cm of sample and shake thoroughly. Add 5cm of water and shake gently. Turns cloudy-white if positive.

Test for proteins
Add equal volume of sodium hydroxide to sample at room temperature. Add a few drops of very dilute copper (II) sulfate and gently mix. Turns purple if positive.
