What was Raine's aim?
To see if there was a difference in the pre-frontal cortex between ordinary people and murderers pleading not guilty through diminished responsibility
1 of 10
How many participants were there?
41 murderers pleading not guilty for being insane matched with an ordinary person based on age, gender, etc. 6 participants in both groups had schizophrenia
2 of 10
How was the study carried out?
Each person did a visual targeting test before being injected with a tracer 10 minutes later before doing the task again. A PET scan was then carried out
3 of 10
What were the cortical results?
In the pre-frontal lobe there was lower glucose metabolism in murderers, the parietal lobe was the same and in the occipital lobe there were higher levels in murderers
4 of 10
What were the sub-cortical results?
In the amygdala on the left there was less activity and on the right there was more in the murderers
5 of 10
What was concluded from the study?
That murderer brains were very different from the ordinary people and the areas with abnormal activity were linked to aggression
6 of 10
Why was the study reliable?
It was a standardised procedure so it can be repeated easily and results can be compared making it more valid and credible
7 of 10
What is a strength with the sample?
It was a larger sample which means it is generalisable to a larger population
8 of 10
What is one problem about the sample?
The criminals were all claiming insanity which means that you can't apply the results to 'sane' murderers
9 of 10
Why was there ethical problems?
Protection from harm could have been broken due to the injections and they are vulnerable due to insanity so informed consent may not have been properly given
