Biological Molecules

?
Condensation reaction
Occurs when two molecules are joined together with the removal of a water molecule.
1 of 6
Hydrolysis reaction
Occurs when a molecule is split into two smaller molecules with the addition of a water molecule.
2 of 6
Examples of monomers
Monosaccharides, amino acids, nucleotides.
3 of 6
Examples of polymers
Polysaccharides, polypeptides, DNA/RNA.
4 of 6
Why is water useful as a solvent?
Water molecules are polar so are attracted to the positive and negative parts of the solute. They cluster around the charged part of the solute molecules or ions and dissolve them in the solution.
5 of 6
Describe cohesion and surface tension of water.
Hydrogen bonding of water molecules pulls them together- cohesion.
