Structure of cell membranes

?
what is the role of the cell membrane?
act as a barrier between the external environement and the cytoplasm
1 of 12
what is the role of the membrane at the surface of cells?
regulate transport of materials, contain enzymes, have antigens, release chemicals for singalling, contains receptors
2 of 12
what is the role of the membrane within cells?
memebranes are present around many organelles, mitochondria have inner cristae, chloroplasts have inner thylakoid
3 of 12
what is the fluid mosaic model?
proposed by Singer and Nicolson,, model that allowed the passage of molecules through the membrane
4 of 12
what is the structure of the fluid mosaic model?
phospholipid biylayer, made up of phospholipds with hydrophilic heads and hydrophobic tails, carrier and channel proteins, glycoproteins, glycolipids, cholesterol
5 of 12
what are phospholipids?
have hydrophilic heads (water loving) that turn towards the water and hydrophobic fatty acid tails (water hating) that face away from the outsides keeping water out
6 of 12
what are glycolipids?
lipid/phospholipid with a chain of carbohydrate molecules attached
7 of 12
what are glycoproteins?
protein with a chain of carbohydrate molecules attached
8 of 12
what are carrier and channel proteins?
proteins that span the whoe lipid bilayer, they are integral proteins; carriers change their shaoe to carry specific molecues across the membrane, channels alow ions with an electrical charge to pass through
9 of 12
what is cholesterol?
gives mechanical stability and flexibility
10 of 12
what is the structure of the memerbane of a neurone?
protein channels and plasmas cover the long axon and allow entry and exit of ions to bring the conduciton of electrical impulses, myelin sheath,
11 of 12
what is the structure of the memerbane in a white blood cell?
contain special protein receptors that enable them to recognise antigens on foreign cells
