One Sugar molecule, 2 and more than 2
1 of 6
What is a Glycosidic Bond?
A type of covalent bond between a Carbohydrate and another group which may or may not be another Carbohydrate
2 of 6
What is a Condensation Reaction?
A reaction where water is produced (conversion of a vapour/gas to a liquid)
3 of 6
What is a Hydrolysis Reaction?
When molecules of water are needed to break up a substance (disaccharides to monosaccharides)
4 of 6
What is the Benedict's Test and what is it used for?
It can identify whether there is a reducing sugar (glucose) in a food sample by changing color from blue to green/yellow/orange/red.
5 of 6
How does the Benedict's Reagent change colour?
When reducing sugars are heated in the presence of an alkali, they get converted to powerful reducing compounds known as enediols. Enediols reduce the Cu2+ ions present in the Benedict's reagent to cu+, this causes the color change.
