Bacteria (Accept any other correct answer)
1 of 24
Give an example of a Eukaryote
Animal or Plant cells.
2 of 24
What is a Plasma (Cell Surface) Membrane's description?
It's found on the surface of animal cells and inside the cell wall of plant cells. It's mainly made of lipids and proteins.
3 of 24
What is a Plasma (Cell Surface) Membrane's function?
Regulates the movement of substances in and out of the cell. It has receptor molecules on it, which allow it to respond to chemicals like hormones.
4 of 24
What is a Cell Walls description?
A rigid structure surrounding the outside of plant cells. It's mainly made of cellulose.
5 of 24
What is a Cell Walls function?
Supports plant cells.
6 of 24
What is a Nucleus' description?
A large organelle surrounded by a nuclear envelope, which contains pores. The nucleus contains chromatin and a structure called the nucleolus.
7 of 24
What is a Nucleus' function?
Controls the cell's activities. DNA contains instructions to make proteins. The pores allow for substances to move between the nucleus and the cytoplasm. The nucleolus makes ribosomes.
8 of 24
What is a Lysosomes' description?
A round organelle surrounded by a membrane, with no clear internal structure.
9 of 24
What is a Lysosomes' function?
Contains digestive enzymes. These are kept separate from the cytoplasm by the surrounding membrane, and can be used to digest invading cells or to break down worn out components of the cell.
10 of 24
What is a Ribosomes' description?
A small organelle that either floats freely or is attached to the rough endoplasmic reticulum. It's made up of proteins and RNA. It's not surrounded by a membrane.
11 of 24
What is a Ribosomes' function?
The site where proteins are made.
12 of 24
What is a Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum's description?
A system of membranes enclosing a fluid-filled space. The surface is covered with ribosomes.
13 of 24
What is a Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum's function?
Folds and processes proteins that have been made at the ribosomes.
14 of 24
What is a Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum's description?
Similar to rough but it doesn't have ribosomes.
15 of 24
What is a Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum's function?
Synthesises and processes lipids.
16 of 24
What is a Vesicles description?
A small fluid-filled sac in the cytoplasm, surrounded by a membrane.
17 of 24
What is a Vesicles function?
Transports substances in and out of the cell and between organelles. Some are formed by the Golgi Apparatus or the Endoplasmic Reticulum, while others are formed at the cell surface.
18 of 24
What is a Golgi Apparatus' description?
A group of fluid-filled, membrane bound, flattened sacs. Vesicles are often at the edges of the sacs.
19 of 24
What is a Golgi Apparatus' function?
It processes and packages new lipids and proteins. It also makes lysosomes.
20 of 24
What is a Mitochondrion's description?
They're usually oval-shaped. They have a double membrane - the inner membrane is folded to form cristae. Inside is the matrix, which contains enzymes involved in respiration.
21 of 24
What is a Mitochondrion's function?
The site of aerobic respiration. where ATP is produced. They're found in large numbers in cells that are very active and require a lot of energy.
22 of 24
What is a Chloroplasts description?
A small flattened structure found in plant cells. It's surrounded by a double membrane, and also has membranes inside called thylakoid membranes. These are stacked up in some parts to form grana. These Grana are linked together by lamellae.
23 of 24
What is a Chloroplasts function?
The site where photosynthesis takes place. Some parts happen in the grana and others in the stroma (a thick fluid found in chloroplasts).
